Christmas Trees for Dunes Project

Public Works Department Launches "Grinding of the Greens" Program for Live Christmas Tree Disposal

PLEASE NOTE: There are no plans to continue the Trees for Dunes program as of 2023 and onward due to concerns with turtle nesting. Instead, the Town of Oak Island has instituted a Grinding of the Greens program. Please see the town website for dates and places to bring your live, undecorated tree after the holidays.

For the 2023 Holiday:

Trees must be cleaned of all non-vegetative decorations, such as lights and ornaments, and can be dropped off at any of the following three (3) locations:

  • Public Beach Access parking lot at 604 Ocean

  • Center parking lot at NE 52nd Street & E Yacht Drive

  • Disposal Convenience Site at 4110 Airport Road (during regular operating hours)

Wind and water continually reshape the beach, and maintaining dunes is a never-ending task. To assist with building and protecting dunes, BPSI conducted Trees for Dunes events in past years. Residents contributed used natural Christmas trees, Public Works hauled them to the beach, and our enthusiastic volunteers staked them within sand fence sections so they could trap windblown sand! These efforts have been very successful as we have seen the size of the dunes “grow”!
